Schizandra

Jan 2012 One of the most popular types of natural remedy at the moment is Schizandra(Schisandra), taken from the berries of the shrub of the same name. The hardy schizandra plant, also called the magnolia vine, is easy to grow in most types of soil, and yet the claims for its medicinal qualities are extraordinary. Praise for the herb (or is it a fruit?) from people who have been helped by it have given it a good reputation worldwide, as has research in China where it has long been valued in natural healthcare.

Some of you may have heard that this herb is good for respiratory conditions, and it’s easy to find stories of sufferers who have found relief in this way, from this author for one, hence the website, to help other Asthma sufferers regain control of their lives. Difficulty breathing, whether it’s due to minor ailments or chronic conditions like asthma, is one of the most distressing experiences we can have, so if this is you, give this simple herb a try, you will be amazed at the results!

However, respiratory conditions aren’t the only health problems that might make you reach for this wonder herb.  In China, where it is an ancient and traditional remedy, it’s used to help alleviate a wide range of illnesses and conditions. It has also long been used as a sedative in China, so a schizandra vine climbing against the wall or fence in your garden could provide the berries to keep you calm. As it’s so popular, you can also find it in health food shops and online.

If you have no stress-related or respiratory problems, you could still try it out as a tonic, and we could all do with that.  Irritable bowel syndrome can seem impossible to deal with, but you could try this traditional Chinese remedy together with wormwood, ginger, buplerum and codonopsis pilosula. You can find schizandra and the other remedies in your local health store or online if this proves difficult (or via the link below, of course!)

In China, trials have been carried out on schizandra to test some of the claims made about its benefits. This research suggests that it may well have a protective effect on the liver and the immune system. This makes it a potentially powerful remedy against many diseases, including the most serious ones we could confront.

In the Chinese tests even people with chronic viral hepatitis appeared to be helped by the herb. The way that it seemed to work was by activating enzymes to produce glutathione. There are more than 19 species of schizandra and all are used in Chinese medicine.  Along with the serious conditions it may help combat, schizandra is also used for help resisting infections, to stimulate healthy skin, as a deterrent against insomnia, as a cough medicine, and even to help you feel less thirsty!
