Schizandra Berry

Feb 2012 The Schizandra berry (Schisandra berry) comes from a climbing vine that’s native to East Asia. If you would like your own schizandra berry supply you’ll find that this is a hardy deciduous plant that likes to grow against a shady wall or fence. To increase the berry supply you can take cuttings of the shoots in August, wet them and dip in hormone powder then plant them indoors to bring them on before planting outside permanently.

The dried schizandra berry is used as a medicine and also has an interesting flavour. In Chinese medicine herbs and plants are differentiated by the five different flavour groups and this berry remarkably has them all. For this reason it is known in Chinese as wu wei zi, which means five-flavoured fruit.  The schizandra berry is salty, sweet, sour, pungent or spicy, and also bitter. Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that combining all five basic flavours is matched by the berry’s large number of medicinal uses.

Taken as a supplement, it can make a great substitute for a cup of coffee to wake you up in the morning. The strange thing is that, taken at night, a schizandra berry supplement is said to help you sleep. If you try schizandra berry supplements and find them useful to stimulate your mind and also to relax you and combat insomnia, then an extra benefit would be that you could avoid the side effects of caffeine or sleeping tablets.

So how can the schizandra berry both stimulate your brain and relax it? The answer is that the schizandra berry is classified by Chinese natural medicine as an ‘adaptogenic’ remedy, which normalises your condition. In this way the schizandra berry treatment works by removing extremes of sleepiness or nervous agitation to restore an ideal state – or so the theory goes and many people swear by it.

In China this berry has been mentioned in herbal medicine books for two thousand years, and the adaptogenic properties of the schizandra berry have been a traditional remedy since those times.  Because its considered good for normalising imbalances, the schizandra berry is taken for fatigue, nervous exhaustion and lack of energy. By contrast the schizandra berry is also considered useful for stimulation, particularly for beautifying the skin, improving brain function and even giving potency to the sexual organs!

Chinese remedies have become increasingly popular in the US, Russia, Scandinavia and Western Europe in recent years and the schizandra berry is one of the staple remedies. This is because the schizandra berry is considered effective for so many conditions.
